Short but Stunning Gorge Walk

Almbachklamm is a hidden gem and well worth a visit if you're in the Berchtesgaden area. The walk takes about 15–20 minutes one way along a beautiful, well-maintained path that winds through a narrow gorge with a river running below. You walk mostly on bridges and footpaths above the water, with several small waterfalls and crystal-clear pools along the way—absolutely stunning views all around.

The path is very organized and safe, suitable for most fitness levels, and it's an easy yet rewarding experience. There’s a small entrance fee (between €2 and €4 per person), which helps with the upkeep—and it’s clearly well invested, because everything is clean and in great shape.

It’s a peaceful and refreshing stop if you’re exploring the area. Highly recommended for nature lovers, photographers, or anyone looking for a short scenic hike in Bavaria.

Very cool! Was there while raining, which was really an advantage, because it was not too crowded.

You can either go up and down same way besides the river and waterfalls, or go down an alternative route. We took alternative route, was very cool!

The natural beauty of this place is truly mesmerizing. The gorge is home to a variety of flora and fauna, and the lush greenery contrasted beautifully with the sparkling waters. The sound of rushing water and the fresh, crisp air added to the serene atmosphere, making the hike a rejuvenating experience. The hiking trail through Almbachklamm was well-maintained and easy to navigate, suitable for both novice hikers and experienced trekkers. The path included a series of wooden bridges and staircases that provided stunning views of the gorge and its many waterfalls. Along the way, informative signs offered insights into the geological history and natural features of the area. Entrance fees is 11€ per person

The entrance is easily accessible by car and public transport. There is a parking lot near the Kugelmühle (marble mill), which serves as the starting point for the gorge walk. The trail is well-marked and maintained, making it suitable for families, though parts of the path can be steep and slippery, requiring sturdy footwear.

The hike is approximately 3 km one way and takes about 2-3 hours round trip, depending on your pace and the time spent admiring the scenery. The trail winds through the narrow gorge, with bridges and staircases providing safe passage over the rushing Almbach River. You will be treated to numerous waterfalls, rock formations, and serene pools along the way.

Various vantage points along the trail offer stunning views of the gorge and surrounding landscape. The interplay of light and water creates a magical atmosphere, particularly in the early morning or late afternoon.

The gorge (Klamm) itself is amazing, but it’s overcrowded, which makes it difficult to walk, stop, and truly enjoy the beauty of nature.

Parking is free. The entrance costs 8 euros, or 7 if you have a guest card (2024 prices). You reach the gorge in a couple of minutes from the parking lot.

The path through the gorge is very well maintained and mesmerizing. In 3 km uphill you will reach Theresienklause.

Then you can go back through the gorge again or take the path to Ettenberg and then down to the parking lot again, adding 5 extra km and making it circular as we did.

Total distance: 8 km.
Total time: 3 h (taking pictures and going easy).
Moderate level due to the number of steps.
